Announcing the Opening of Hala Tree Café’s Coffee Lab in October
We are excited to announce the grand opening of Hala Tree Café’s coffee lab this October!
Located downstairs from our café in Ka’a’awa, this one-of-a-kind space is designed to bring coffee lovers together, from curious beginners to seasoned professionals, for an immersive, hands-on experience with some of the finest coffee in the world: 100% Kona coffee.
The coffee lab will host a variety of weekly events and educational opportunities. Central to our offerings will be guided coffee tastings, where participants will explore the rich flavors and complexities of 100% Kona coffee, renowned for its balanced sweetness and delicate flavors.
These tastings will offer an in-depth introduction to Kona coffee’s distinctive characteristics and help participants hone their palates through professional flavor analysis techniques. Whether you’re a coffee enthusiast eager to learn more about how different factors like processing methods and elevation impact flavor or a seasoned coffee pro looking to deepen your sensory analysis skills, these weekly events are perfect for you.
But the coffee lab is about more than just tasting great coffee. We offer a comprehensive range of classes designed to expand your coffee knowledge and refine your brewing techniques.
For home coffee enthusiasts, we’ll help you elevate your morning routine by mastering coffee brewing methods like pour-over, French press, and more. Our goal is to give you the skills and confidence to brew café-quality coffee right at home.
For those with a more professional interest, the coffee lab will provide advanced classes that delve into the science of coffee, focusing on topics like roasting, sensory analysis, and green coffee evaluation. You’ll get hands-on experience in roasting, learning how variables like time, temperature, and airflow affect the final cup. Our sensory analysis classes will help you develop the skills needed to evaluate coffee on a deeper level, including how to identify tasting notes and quantify sweetness, acidity, and body.
The coffee lab is led by Hala Tree Café’s General Manager, Brian Webb, who brings nearly two decades of experience in the specialty coffee industry. Brian’s journey in coffee began in 2006, and since then, he’s worn many hats, from managing coffee shops and roasteries to teaching professional coffee courses at global coffee events, to serving as the Chair of the Hawaii Coffee Association’s Statewide Cupping Competition.
Under Brian's leadership, the lab promises to offer an unparalleled learning experience and a deep connection to Hawaii’s coffee-growing culture. Brian’s passion for coffee education is at the heart of this new space, and we look forward to sharing his knowledge and experience with all who attend.
The opening of the coffee lab marks the beginning of the next chapter for Hala Tree Café, where we’re committed not only to serving world-class Kona coffee straight from our farm to your cup, but also providing a space where the Hawaii coffee community can come together to learn and explore the rich world of coffee.
