Why We Serve Only 100% Kona Coffee on Oʻahu
At Hala Tree Cafe, every coffee we serve is 100% Kona coffee - grown, processed, and roasted by us on our family farm in South Kona, Hawaiʻi.
We do not serve imported coffee, Kona blends, or non-Hawaiian origins.
This makes Hala Tree Cafe the only coffee shop on Oʻahu with a Kona-only coffee program.
What “100% Kona Coffee” Actually Means
In Hawaiʻi, the term Kona coffee is often misunderstood.
Legally, a coffee labeled “Kona” may contain as little as 51% Kona coffee, with the remaining portion made up of imported beans.
These products are commonly referred to as Kona blends, and they are widely sold in cafés, grocery stores, and tourist areas.
While Kona blends are legal and common, they are not the same as 100% Kona coffee.
At Hala Tree Cafe, every coffee we serve is 100% Kona - not blended, not mixed with imported coffee, and not offered only as a premium add-on.
Kona Is Not an Option Here - It Is the Entire Program
Many cafés on Oʻahu feature Kona coffee only as an option alongside imported coffee. At those shops, Kona may appear as:
-
a rotating single-origin
-
an espresso upcharge
-
a retail item
-
a limited seasonal offering
At Hala Tree Cafe, Kona is not just one option on the menu, it is the only coffee we serve.
What that means in practice:
-
All espresso drinks are made with 100% Kona coffee
-
All brewed coffee is 100% Kona
-
All retail whole bean coffee is 100% Kona
-
No imported coffee is served in any form
-
No Kona blends are used
Why Most Coffee Shops Don’t Serve Only Kona
True 100% Kona coffee is:
-
expensive to grow and produce
-
limited in annual supply
-
seasonal and variable by lot
For most cafés, serving imported coffee provides lower costs, more consistency, and a wider range of flavor profiles. As a result, the vast majority of “Kona coffee” served in Hawaiʻi is either blended or offered selectively as a premium upgrade.
Hala Tree Cafe chooses a different path: to build an entire farm-direct coffee program around one origin, grown and managed by us from farm to cup.
From Our Farm to Your Cup
All of our coffee is grown on our family farm in Kona, where we manage every step of production:
-
cultivation
-
harvesting
-
processing
-
drying
-
roasting
Because we control every stage of production, we can serve Kona coffee transparently and without compromise, exactly as it was grown.
When you drink coffee at Hala Tree Cafe, you are drinking coffee that comes directly from our farm, without intermediaries, blends, or substitutions.
